The Place for our Programming

Photo credit: Vicki Russell, Chapel Hill Garden Club

Overview: Chapel Hill Retreat Center LLC programming takes place on a private estate in Chapel Hill, NC (USA), just two miles from downtown Carrboro, four miles from downtown Chapel Hill, and close to University Lake. The elegant property is nestled in a four-acre woodland forest that features moss-covered walking trails, two creeks, and a dozen outdoor garden rooms, and is a Certified Bird-Friendly Habitat (New Hope Audubon Society, 2017) and Certified Wildlife Habitat (North Carolina Wildlife Federation, 2017).

Past: The property was likely home to several Native American tribes, including the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation and, according to a forestry expert, the oldest trees on the property are approximately 70-year old (Yonavjak, 2023). In 1987, the current house was built and the Outer Loop (walking trail) was established. In the early 2000s, the second owner, with inspiration from NC State Parks and help from a certified landscape designer, established the extensive network of moss-covered walking trails, low stone walls, and native plantings. In 2016, the current owner established the small scale permaculture ecosystem, including the 1,800 square foot food forest, chicken coop, compost system, seed starting station, and micro greenhouse.

Present: Now, the property has a therapeutic landscape design with welcoming walking trails and a dozen garden rooms complete with fire pits, hammocks, and tree swings. This healing environment is designed to foster transcendent experiences and was featured in Chapel Hill Magazine and Triangle Gardener, through the NC Botanical Garden, and on the Chapel Hill Garden Club Tour. Guests are encouraged to walk slowly, breathe deeply, and savor the peace and tranquility found in nature.

"Nature never did betray the heart that loved her."

William Wordsworth
